Hammam in Istanbul 2026: What to Bring and Expect

What to expect at a hammam in Istanbul
A standard hammam visit runs about 60 to 90 minutes and follows a fixed sequence: you undress, warm up on the heated marble, get scrubbed, get foam-washed, then cool down with çay. A self-service entry at a tourist hammam in Sultanahmet starts around 1,200-1,500 lira in 2026, and the full scrub-and-foam package runs 2,000-3,500 lira depending on the venue. Everything below is about not feeling lost once you're inside.
Hammam (Turkish bathhouse) anxiety is mostly about the unknowns: where you undress, who touches you, whether you keep something on, how much to hand over at the end. The procedure is the same whether you go to a 16th-century tourist hammam or a neighbourhood one, so once you know the order, you can relax into it.
Do you have to get naked at a Turkish bath?
No. You wear a peştemal (thin checkered cotton wrap) the entire time, and you keep your underwear on underneath if you want to. Hammams in Istanbul are gender-separated, either by separate sections or by alternating hours, so you're never in a mixed room. The attendant is the same gender as you.
When you arrive, the front desk gives you a peştemal, a pair of wooden or rubber sandals, and a key to a small changing cubicle. You undress in private, wrap the peştemal around you, and walk out to the hot room. Men typically wrap at the waist; women usually keep underwear on and wrap the same way. Nobody is looking. The marble is the point.
The scrub and the foam massage
The core of the visit is the kese (coarse exfoliating mitt) scrub followed by a foam wash, performed by an attendant on the central heated marble slab called the göbektaşı. You lie down, the attendant scrubs you head to toe, rinses you, then covers you in soap foam and massages it in. The whole thing takes 20 to 30 minutes.
First you sit on the warm marble for ten or fifteen minutes to open your pores and sweat a little. Then the attendant calls you over and goes to work with the kese. The dead skin comes off in visible grey rolls, which is unpleasant to read about and oddly satisfying in person. After the scrub you get the foam, poured from a cloth pillow they whip full of air, and a firm but not deep massage. Then a bucket of warm water over the head, and you're done.
If you skip the scrub package and pay self-service entry only, you wash yourself at one of the marble basins around the room. You fill the metal bowl from the tap and pour water over yourself. No attendant, no obligation, no scrub. It's cheaper and perfectly fine if you just want the heat and the room.
How much to tip at a hammam in Istanbul
Tipping is expected for the attendant who scrubs you. A reasonable tip in 2026 is 200-400 lira, roughly 6 to 12 dollars, handed directly to your scrub attendant at the end. If a separate person brings your tea or helps you dry off in the cooling room, 50-100 lira covers them.
Most hammams don't add service to the bill, so the tip is on you and it's appreciated in cash. Hand it to the person who did the work, not the front desk. If two staff handled you, the scrub attendant gets the larger share. For self-service entry with no scrub, a small tip to the person who hands you towels is kind but not required.
Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı in Karaköy, built in the 1580s, is the one we'd send a first-timer to: the restoration is excellent and the staff are used to explaining the process in English. It's a tourist hammam and priced like one, but the building is worth the visit.
Bring nothing. They provide the peştemal, the sandals, and the soap. Leave your phone in the locker.
