Turkish Riviera from Istanbul: Towns, Boat Tours and Best Timing

Turkish Riviera from Istanbul: which towns, how to get there, when to go
Most people reach the Turquoise Coast after a few days in Istanbul, not instead of it. The flight south takes about 90 minutes, and three nights on the coast is the honest minimum. Pick one base, Fethiye or Kaş, and day-trip from there rather than hopping towns.
Which towns are worth your time
Three names carry most of the coast: Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, and Kaş. Fethiye is the working base with the most flights, the biggest harbour, and the easiest onward connections. Ölüdeniz sits 15 kilometers south and holds the Blue Lagoon beach. Kaş is the quieter diving-and-walking town two hours further east. Each has a different feel.
Fethiye is where you land and sort logistics. The harbour runs the day boats, the market on Tuesdays fills the town center, and buses and shuttles fan out from here to everywhere else on the coast. It is not a beach town itself; the swimming is at Çalış Beach or on the boats.
Ölüdeniz is the postcard: a protected lagoon of still, pale water backed by pine hills. It is beautiful and it is busy, especially July and August, when the beach fills by mid-morning. The paragliders you'll see overhead launch from Babadağ, the mountain above town, and that flight is the single most-booked activity on this stretch of coast.
Kaş rewards the extra two hours in the car. Smaller streets, a working fishing harbour, better diving, and the Lycian ruins scattered around the bay offer plenty to explore. If you want one town to slow down in rather than tick off, make it this one.
How to get there from Istanbul
Fly. Dalaman airport (DLM) is the gateway for Fethiye and Ölüdeniz, about 50 kilometers and an hour by shuttle. Both Istanbul airports serve Dalaman daily, and the flight runs about 90 minutes. Book the airport shuttle with your hotel when you book the room; a seat on the shared minibus costs far less than a private transfer.
The overnight bus from Istanbul exists and takes 12 to 14 hours. It saves money and costs you a full day plus a night's sleep. Unless flights are sold out on your dates, fly and keep the time.
For Kaş, you still fly into Dalaman, then it is roughly a two-hour drive further east along the coast. Some travellers fly into Antalya (AYT) instead and approach Kaş from the other side, which is a similar drive. Check both airports for fares before you book.
Which boat tours are worth booking
The classic is the 12 Islands day boat out of Fethiye harbour, roughly 9 AM to 5 PM, stopping to swim in a handful of bays. Prices in 2026 sit around 600 to 900 lira per person, lunch usually included. It is a good day if the weather is calm, and a long one if the boat is packed, so ask how many passengers before you pay.
From Kaş, the smaller boats run to the sunken Lycian ruins off Kekova island, where you snorkel over submerged walls and staircases. These trips are quieter and the water is clearer than around Fethiye.
If you want a proper multi-day trip, the Blue Cruise gulet boats sail the Fethiye-to-Olympos route over three or four nights, sleeping on deck. Book those ahead in high season; the good boats fill weeks out.
When to visit
The coast is hot and busy from mid-June to the end of August, with daytime highs often above 35 degrees and every beach at capacity. The sweet spot is May to mid-June and September to mid-October: warm sea, thinner crowds, and manageable heat. April and late October are quiet and cheaper, but some boats and beach clubs scale back.
The short version: fly into Dalaman, base yourself in Fethiye or Kaş for three nights, book one day boat and one flight or dive, and aim for late May or September if you can choose your dates.
