Chora Church Istanbul 2026: Mosaics, Tickets and Getting There

Is Chora Church still worth visiting in 2026?

Chora Church, now Kariye Mosque, sits out by the old land walls in Edirnekapı, a good thirty minutes from Sultanahmet. It reopened to visitors after its 2024 reconversion to a working mosque, and the Byzantine mosaics and frescoes are still there and still visible. Short answer: yes, it is worth the trip.

The mosaics here are the reason to come. They are some of the finest surviving Byzantine work anywhere, more detailed and better preserved than what you'll see at Hagia Sophia. If you've already done the big five in Sultanahmet and want one more serious Byzantine site, this is the one.

How to get to Chora Church from Sultanahmet

From Sultanahmet, the cleanest route is the T1 tram to Pazartekke, then the 87 bus up to Edirnekapı, which lands you a few minutes' walk from the mosque. Total time is around 40 minutes. A taxi runs about 25 to 30 minutes and 250 to 350 lira depending on traffic.

The tram-plus-bus combo costs roughly 35 lira each way with an İstanbulkart, the contactless transit card you tap at every gate. The bus part is the bit people get wrong, so if you'd rather not deal with it, just take a taxi straight to Kariye Camii. Most drivers know it by that name, not the English one.

Kariye Camii sits in a quiet residential pocket near the Theodosian land walls. It's off the main tourist drag, which is part of why it stays calmer than the Sultanahmet sites even at midday.

Tickets and entrance fee

As of 2026, entry to Kariye Mosque is ticketed for non-worshippers, with the fee in the 20 to 25 euro range, payable at the door. Important: the Istanbul Museum Pass does NOT cover Chora. It became a mosque, not a museum, so the pass is invalid here. Bring separate cash or card for entry.

This trips people up constantly. They show up with a Museum Pass expecting free entry, the same way it works at Topkapı or the Archaeology Museums, and it doesn't apply. The pass is worthless at the door here. Budget the entry fee on top of whatever else you've already paid for.

What you can actually see inside

The building has an outer narthex, an inner narthex, the main nave, and a side chapel called the parecclesion. After the reconversion, the mosaics and frescoes have largely stayed visible, though as a working mosque some areas may be curtained or restricted during prayer times. The five daily prayers each close the building briefly, so avoid arriving right on a prayer call.

The two narthexes hold the mosaic cycles: the life of the Virgin Mary and the infancy of Christ, worked in tiny glass and gold tesserae. The parecclesion, the funerary chapel on the south side, holds the frescoes, including the Anastasis scene of Christ pulling Adam and Eve from their tombs. That fresco alone is worth the journey.

Dress code and practical notes

This is a mosque, so dress accordingly: knees and shoulders covered for everyone, hair covered for women. Scarves are usually available at the entrance if you don't have one. Shoes come off before you enter the prayer area.

There's no left-luggage facility at the mosque, so travel light if you're coming straight from another sight. Give yourself about 45 minutes inside, longer if you want to study the mosaic panels properly.

If you're already planning the big Byzantine day, do Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern in the morning, then come out to Chora in the early afternoon when the crowds back in Sultanahmet are at their worst. The bus back drops you at the tram, and you're in Beyoğlu for dinner by evening.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Istanbul Museum Pass valid for Chora Church?

No. After Chora reconverted to a working mosque (Kariye Camii), it is no longer covered by the Istanbul Museum Pass. You pay a separate entry fee at the door, in the 20 to 25 euro range as of 2026, with cash or card.

How do you get to Chora Church from Sultanahmet?

Take the T1 tram to Pazartekke, then the 87 bus up to Edirnekapı, about 40 minutes total and roughly 35 lira each way with an İstanbulkart. A taxi is faster at 25 to 30 minutes and costs about 250 to 350 lira depending on traffic.

Are the Chora Church mosaics still visible in 2026?

Yes. The mosaics in the two narthexes and the frescoes in the parecclesion have largely stayed visible after the reconversion. Some areas may be curtained or restricted during the five daily prayer times, so avoid arriving right on a prayer call.

How much time should you spend at Chora Church?

Plan for about 45 minutes inside, longer if you want to study the mosaic cycles and the Anastasis fresco properly. The site is smaller than Hagia Sophia but the detail rewards a slow look.

Is Chora Church worth visiting after the mosque conversion?

Yes, especially if you've already seen the main Sultanahmet sites and want one more serious Byzantine site. The mosaics here are more detailed and better preserved than those at Hagia Sophia, and the area stays quieter than central Sultanahmet.
