Topkapı Palace is the one big Sultanahmet attraction where people get the planning wrong before they even arrive. They show up on a Tuesday when it's closed, skip the harem because they didn't know it's a separate ticket, or rush the whole thing in under an hour and leave underwhelmed. The palace was the seat of the Ottoman sultans for around 400 years, and it rewards a bit of preparation. Here's what we'd tell a friend before they go.

What are the opening hours in 2026?

Topkapı Sarayı Müzesi opens at 9:00 and closes at 18:00 in summer (mid-April to October), with last entry around 17:00. In winter it closes earlier, around 16:45 with last entry at 16:00. The one fixed rule worth memorizing: the palace is closed every Tuesday, no exceptions. Check the official Müze ticket site before you go, since hours shift slightly each season.

Go first thing. If you're through the gate by 9:15 on a weekday, you'll have the first courtyards almost to yourself before the tour groups arrive around 10:30.

How much do tickets cost?

In 2026 the standard Topkapı Palace ticket runs roughly 1500-1700 lira (about 40-45 euros) for the main palace, and the harem is a separate add-on at around 700-850 lira (about 20 euros). The official ticketing portal, Müze, sells a combined Topkapı plus Hagia Irene option that bundles the two for slightly less than buying them apart. Prices are set by the state museum authority and have been climbing each season, so treat these as a planning estimate rather than a fixed figure.

Do you need to book in advance? On a summer weekend, yes. The on-site queue can run 30 to 45 minutes by late morning, and a timed online ticket lets you skip it. On a quiet winter weekday you can usually walk up and buy at the gate without much wait.

Is the harem ticket worth it?

For most people, yes. The harem is the most atmospheric part of the whole complex: tiled corridors, the sultan's private apartments, and the chambers where the royal family actually lived, all behind the İznik tilework Topkapı is known for. The main palace ticket does not include it, which catches a lot of visitors out at the entrance. If you're only going to splurge on one add-on, make it this one. Budget an extra 40 minutes for the harem rooms alone.

How long should you spend?

Plan for two to three hours for the full palace, longer if it's busy. The four courtyards, the Treasury (which holds the Topkapı Dagger and the 86-carat Spoonmaker's Diamond), the Imperial Council chamber, and the terrace overlooking the Bosphorus all take time. Add 40 minutes for the harem on top. Rushing it in under an hour is the surest way to leave disappointed.

Topkapı or Hagia Sophia first?

They're a five-minute walk apart on the Sultanahmet peninsula, and most people do both in a day. Our order: Hagia Sophia at 9:00 when it opens for visitors, then Topkapı late morning into early afternoon, with lunch in between. Topkapı is the bigger time commitment of the two, so don't leave it until you're already tired. If you've got the Hagia Irene combo ticket, that deconsecrated Byzantine church sits inside the first courtyard and takes only 15 minutes.

Last practical note: the Treasury and the harem are the two sections that get jammed by midday. Do them first, work outward to the courtyards and the Bosphorus terrace after, and you'll skip the worst of the crush.
