Galata Bridge: fishing, food, and photos in one crossing

The Galata Bridge over the Golden Horn does three jobs at once, and most people only figure out one of them before they leave. The upper deck is a fishing platform lined with rods every morning. The lower deck is a row of fish restaurants. From either bank you get one of the best free views in the city. It spans about 490 meters between Eminönü and Karaköy, and you can walk it in ten minutes or spend three hours on it, depending on what you came for.

Are the Galata Bridge restaurants worth it?

The lower-deck restaurants are a mixed bag: fine for the setting, priced for the location, and worth it only if you go in with expectations set. A grilled fish plate with meze and drinks runs roughly 800 to 1,400 lira per person in 2026, and the waiters outside will pull you in hard. The food is average and the view does the heavy lifting.

If you want the experience, sit down, order one grilled fish, one plate of meze (small shared plates), and a drink, and split the rest of your appetite across the day. Ask for the price before you order, especially on "fish of the day," which is where the bills balloon. If you'd rather eat well and cheaply, walk to the Eminönü side and grab a balık ekmek (fish sandwich) from the boats near the pier for around 150 lira. Same water, a quarter of the cost.

Can you fish on the Galata Bridge?

Yes, anyone can fish from the upper deck, no permit needed, and the regulars are there from before sunrise. They fish mostly for istavrit (horse mackerel) and lüfer (bluefish) when it's in season, using simple hand lines with multiple hooks. You'll see rods propped every couple of meters along both railings, buckets of small silver fish beside them.

If you want to join, tackle shops around the Eminönü side sell a basic rig and bait for a small amount, and nobody minds a visitor squeezing in. Autumn is the busy season for lüfer, when the whole railing fills up. Even if you never cast a line, the fishing deck is the most alive part of the bridge, and it costs nothing to watch, which is most of what visitors do here anyway.

Best time and spot to photograph the Galata Bridge

Shoot the bridge at sunrise from the Eminönü side or at golden hour from the Karaköy side, and you'll get the two best frames it offers. In the morning the light comes over the Asian side and lands on the Yeni Mosque and the rods on the deck. In the late afternoon, the sun drops behind Süleymaniye and Galata Tower, and you can line both up over the water.

For the classic shot with Galata Tower rising behind the bridge, stand on the Eminönü waterfront near the ferry piers and shoot back toward Karaköy. For fishing silhouettes, get on the deck itself just before sunset and shoot along the railing. The bridge is busiest and least photogenic in the middle of the day, so skip midday if you can.

Getting there

The bridge sits between the Eminönü tram stop and Karaköy, both on the T1 tram line, so you can reach either end for the price of one tap on a contactless card. From Eminönü you can also catch ferries across to Üsküdar and Kadıköy from the same piers.

Come at sunrise if you can only come once. The fishermen are already there, the light is on the mosques, and you'll have the deck mostly to yourself.
